The CEO and General Manager Luigi Ferraris has spoken about it on several occasions, stressing its value. By now, dialogue with local communities has become an integral part of Terna’s network development. The participatory design model is based on awareness of how effective the involvement of local communities and citizens is in every phase of the development and implementation of electricity works. Exchanging information with the communities and local institutions involved and listening to their opinions had a decisive role insofar as defining shared solutions regarding the placement of the new infrastructures and updating of the existing ones. It is no coincidence that in 2019 alone there were over 450 meetings organised by Terna in the area with this objective, as Luigi Ferraris explained: “We have maintained an onoing relationship with local institutions and citizens, listening to their observations and acknowledging their concern, to ensure their hands-on participation in the planning of the works“. These also include the “Terna incontra”[Terna meets], which provide information about the rationale and advantages underlying the planned infrastructure works. A markedly growing initiative: in 2018 the Group organised close to 350 meetings, 18 of which with citizens under the “Terna incontra” banner, and public events in nine regions. In 2019, the number of meetings rose to around 450: there were 40 “Terna incontra” meets, a 29% increase. On these occasions, the Group’s technicians and designers illustrate and explain to the public all the phases of a project’s life cycle, from development to network management and maintenance, and listen to their opinions, responding to requests for clarification from the territory. The CEO and GM Luigi Ferraris pointed out that for the Group this is “a strategic lever for the renewal of the national electricity grid”. The dialogue with local communities reflects Terna’s strong commitment to creating the conditions to “build” an increasingly sustainable and efficient national electricity grid together.
