The 2025 edition of “Europe’s Climate Leaders”, compiled by the Financial Times and Statista, has crowned Sweden’s Tele2 as the continent’s most climate-conscious company. This recognition comes as the ranking celebrates firms that have made the most significant strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. At the top of the list, companies from Northern Europe dominate, particularly those from the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany.

Nevertheless, a few Italian names stand out, notably Erg, which clinched third place. In fact, Erg’s achievement comes as no surprise to industry observers. Since 2008, the company has shifted its focus from its original core in oil refining to investing fully in renewable energy. As a result, it now ranks among the top ten wind energy operators in Europe.

Although Northern European firms tend to lead, the list isn’t meant to label winners and losers. Rather, it highlights progress across Europe toward a low-carbon economy. An encouraging sign, especially considering that geopolitical shifts could influence future policy direction.

In terms of evaluation, the ranking primarily focuses on Scope 1 and 2 emissions – those produced directly by a company’s operations or energy use – while also assessing transparency regarding Scope 3 emissions from the supply chain, and the level of cooperation with sustainability rating bodies.
