Leone Alato’s SBTi-approved plan, led by Giancarlo Fancel, combines renewable energy and advanced farming to cut CO2e emissions by 90% by 2040.

Leone Alato, the agri-food and wine holding company of Generali of which Giancarlo Fancel is Country Manager and CEO, has recently made history as the first Italian agricultural company to receive approval for its CO2e emissions reduction targets from the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi). This international recognition, a result of collaboration between major organizations such as the World Resource Institute, the Carbon Disclosure Project, the United Nations Global Compact, and WWF, confirms the company’s innovative and ambitious approach to sustainability.

The company’s plan is clear and challenging: to reduce absolute emissions by 90% by 2040, covering all aspects of the value chain, including Scope 1, 2, and 3. Special focus is given to FLAG emissions—Forest, Land, and Agriculture emissions, which relate to land use in the agricultural sector. The company has committed to reducing these emissions by 72% by 2040.

Alongside these long-term goals, Leone Alato has also set “near-term” goals for 2033, including a 58.8% reduction in direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) and a 35% reduction in indirect emissions (Scope 3). Specifically, for FLAG emissions, the goal is a 42.4% reduction in Scope 1 and 3 emissions by 2033.

To achieve these ambitious targets, the company is implementing concrete and innovative actions. Among the main strategies are the adoption of regenerative farming practices, the integration of advanced technologies such as drones and satellites (agriculture 4.0), the use of biofuels and organic fertilizers, and the promotion of sustainable packaging. Additionally, the company is investing in the production and use of renewable energy from photovoltaic and agrivoltaic systems.

Giancarlo Fancel, Country Manager and CEO of Generali Italia, as well as Chairman of the Leone Alato Group, stated: “For us, sustainability is the guiding principle of our business model. It means being a transformative company, generating a positive impact in the communities where we operate, and creating long-term shared value for all stakeholders”.

This commitment, translated into concrete and measurable actions, not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also represents a strategic vision for the future of the agricultural and agri-food sector, in line with global emissions reduction targets.

To ensure the effectiveness of its actions and the development of its Carbon Footprint, Leone Alato has collaborated with SDA Bocconi – Invernizzi AGRI Lab, which provided scientific support in defining the Science Based Target. This partnership highlights the importance of a solid scientific foundation to guide corporate policies towards sustainability.
